Free domain names in Indian Languages

As of 10/01/2021

Previous decade was dedicated to Globalism. However as time unfolds it is getting clear that the next decade will be that of ‘Localism’.

The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) has announced that it is going to offer a free IDN (Internationalised Domain Name) in any of the 22 Indian languages, when a registrant registers a .in domain name. The same perks are also being offered to those who would renew their domain names in January. The last date to avail this offer is January 31st.

NIXI is a non-profit organisation working for providing better internet facilities in India. Its primary function is to exchange the traffic among the ISP, Content creators and organisation with Autonomous System numbers.

Internationalised Domain Names are domain names that contain characters of different scripts, other than that of the usual Latin script. It can contain characters of languages such as Arabic, Korean, Manadarin, Japanese, etc.

The step from NIXI is aimed at popularising the local languages of India and to bring them into the global front. The step is going to provide a major push to a lot of Indian languages like Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, etc., the speakers of which number in millions and deserve their cyberspace.

With major internet domain spaces getting crowded everyday, options like IDNs provide a breath of fresh air. Can there be a better time to go local?
