Ahead of general allocation of .au, accountants warn users

The Australian domain space for .au is going to open for the general public on 20th September. This means that anyone wishing to register a .au domain name can do so, on a First Come First Serve basis. Ahead of the general allocation of names, the accountants association of Australia has warned users of the domain space.

The general manager of technical policy at Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) has warned small businesses about the change. He commented that small businesses are unaware of the change that is going to take place this September and this could cause a detrimental loss to them. IPA is one of three professional bodies for accountants in Australia.

The warning is legitimate considering that a huge section of small businesses are still not aware of the significance of an appropriately placed domain name. If the deadline in September is crossed they won’t be able to secure the .au of their name, even if they had Third level Australian domains.

This is going to severely impact their business and their brand among customers. It might also be the case that someone else, unrelated with that name, registers the domain name. This can further perpetuate harassment of micro, small and medium sized businesses. In order to prevent oneself from such pointless troubles, it is wise to register the respective short .au domain name.

We had informed you about how auDA (Australian Domain Authority), had launched .au domain names. The country that has been using Third level domain names with extensions such as .net.au, .gov.au and .com.au made the Second level .au domain names available. Post this people who had Third level domain names were allocated their respective .au domain name. In case of a conflict a Priority Allocation Process was invoked. If the Priority Allocation Process is also not able to settle the contention, then the matter was solved through dialogue and mutual agreement.
