Did you know Bitcoin was almost named Netcoin?

Bitcoin is the most popular cryptocurrency in the world. The currency is synonymous with the whole crypto industry. The uptick as well as downtick of its valuation suddenly starts representing the health of the whole sector. But did you know the biggest cryptocurrency wasn’t originally named Bitcoin?

Yes, whoever is Satoshi Nakomata, the yet unknown founder of the currency had other names too. Bitcoin’s primary domain name is Bitcoin.org. The domain was registered on 18th August 2008. However, a Twitter post pointed out that another interesting domain name Netcoin.org was registered just a day before, i.e. on 17th August 2008.

Interestingly the information on the registrants of both the domain names are very similar. The address is the same for both and is written ‘1-3-3 Sakura House None’. People are claiming that the same entity that registered the domain name Bitcoin.org, also registered Netcoin.org.

This means Satoshi Nakomata was considering other options as well when naming the currency and Netcoin was certainly one of them. The domain name Netcoin.org was deleted later, which was eventually acquired by Web.com. The name Netcoin thus remained unknown while Bitcoin became a global sensation. Two domain name with the same origin but different destiny.

Can you imagine calling Bitcoin, Netcoin? However, considering its success the maker would have definitely thought that they made the right decision.

Its surreal but nice. Its like you can’t imagine bitcoin netcoin. It doesn’t strike you like bitcoin does. However, given that registrants of both the domain names are very similar, It might make sense to say that bitcoin has other plans related to netcoin as well. It’ll be interesting to know what happens as we go further with bitcoin doing so well in the market.

That’s interesting. I’m glad they stuck with Bitcoin, sounds way better. Coming up with a good name is often one of the most challenging decisions one needs to make when launching a new service or business. Bitcoin.org, the website domain linked to the original Bitcoin, was created on Aug. 18, 2008, under AnonymousSpeech, a service in Japan that allowed users to buy domain names anonymously.
