.xyz to .in: Top emerging Domain trends of Q1 2024

The Domain Name Industry Brief Quarterly Report for Q1 2024 is Out Now. Published by Verisign, this authoritative document offers invaluable insights into current trends shaping the domain name industry. The latest installment of the 2024 report unveils intriguing developments, including a significant surge in ngTLD registrations, noticeable disparities in renewal rates, and the emergence of a new ccTLD within the top 10 list.

New Generic Top-Level Domains (ngTLDs) rise by 22%

The first quarter of 2024 marked a significant uptick in new generic top-level domain (ngTLD) registrations. According to the Domain Name Industry Brief Q1 2024 report, ngTLD registrations reached 33.3 million, reflecting an increase of 1.5 million registrations (4.7%) compared to the previous quarter. Year-over-year, ngTLDs saw a substantial growth of 6.0 million registrations, marking a remarkable 22.1% increase!

ngTLDs were introduced by ICANN to expand beyond traditional TLDs like .com, .net, and .org. These newer extensions, which include TLDs like .xyz, .online, .shop, etc., offer greater flexibility and creativity in domain name choices, catering to specific industries, interests, and geographic locations.

The diversity and creativity offered by ngTLDs contribute to their popularity, catering to specific industries and niche markets that value distinct online branding. As of March 31, 2024, there were 1,264 ngTLD extensions delegated in the root zone, including Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs). The top 10 ngTLDs, such as .xyz, .online, and .shop, collectively accounted for 9.2% of all TLD registrations, indicating their growing significance in the broader domain name ecosystem.

Disparities in Domain Renewal Rates

Although the sharp rise in ngTLD registration might suggest that they are overtaking the legacy TLDs, the renewal rates present a totally different picture. ngTLD might have a upper hand in registrations but when it comes to renewal rates they have a lot to catch up.

The old guards of the domain world—.com, .net, and .org—continue to show strong renewal rates. For example, .com and .net have a combined renewal rate of 74.0%. This high percentage shows that people still trust and stick with these classic domains.

In contrast, the new entrants on the block, new gTLDs (ngTLDs), are having a tougher time. They have a combined renewal rate of just 39.0%. While these new gTLDs are attracting a lot of initial registrations, keeping those registrations in the long run is proving to be a challenge. It seems that while their innovative names are exciting at first, they don’t always convert into long-term loyalty.

Legacy gTLDs

Other legacy gTLDs (excluding .com and .net) are also holding their own with a combined renewal rate of 73.9%. These domains may not be as flashy as the new gTLDs, but they offer stability and reliability, which keeps users coming back.

Top 10 TLDs Renewal Rates

Looking at the top 10 TLDs by number of domain names, we see a mix. For example, .org boasts a solid renewal rate of 80.3%, showing strong user commitment. On the flip side, .com, despite being the most popular, has a renewal rate of 73.7%, which is good but not the highest.

The renewal rate for .net stood at 78.6%. The top 10 TLDs by domain names also included many ccTLDs like .cn, .de, .uk, .ru, .nl, .br and .au.

ccTLDs

Country-code TLDs (ccTLDs) like .fr (France) and .uk (United Kingdom) are doing quite well too. The renewal rates for these domains range from 83.4% for .fr to 75.0% for .uk. This indicates strong regional loyalty and trust in local domains.

Why the Differences?

  • Brand Trust and Recognition: Classic domains like .com and .org are well-known and trusted, which naturally leads to higher renewal rates.
  • Market Dynamics: New gTLDs, despite being exciting and innovative, are in a crowded market. People might register them on a whim but don’t always renew them.
  • Regional Preferences: ccTLDs like .de (Germany) and .uk resonate with local users, who see them as more credible and relevant.
  • Usage and Purpose: Domains used for long-term projects or businesses are more likely to be renewed, whereas those registered for short-term purposes might not be.

Prominence of ccTLDs in Domain Name Registrations

One of the standout findings from the Q1 2024 Domain Name Industry Brief is the dominance of country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs) in the global domain name landscape.

Out of the top 10 domain name registrations, seven are ccTLDs. These include: .cn (China), .de (Germany), .uk (United Kingdom), .ru (Russia), .nl (Netherlands), .br (Brazil), and .au (Australia).

  • China (.cn): .cn domains are essential for navigating China’s vast digital market, known for its stringent regulatory framework. They primarily serve the local market, requiring strategic partnerships or local presence for investment. (20.3 million registrations)
  • Germany (.de): Highly favored within Germany, .de domains are prized for their strong local credibility and trustworthiness. They offer accessible opportunities for global investment, ideal for tapping into Germany’s robust economy and tech-savvy population. (17.7 million registrations)
  • United Kingdom (.uk): .uk domains are synonymous with reliability and British business integrity, making them key for global investors looking to enter diverse sectors within the UK market. (10.7 million registrations)
  • Russia (.ru): Reflecting Russia’s digital expansion, .ru domains provide access to a dynamic market landscape. While primarily used locally, strategic partnerships can enhance investment feasibility. (.ru domains had a renewal rate of 76.9%) (6.4 million registrations)
  • Netherlands (.nl): Known for advanced digital infrastructure, .nl domains are coveted for their association with Dutch innovation and business acumen. They offer global investors opportunities to target niche markets both locally and internationally. (6.3 million registrations)
  • Brazil (.br): As Latin America’s largest economy, .br domains present lucrative prospects. While predominantly used within Brazil, they can be strategically leveraged globally with insights into local market dynamics. (5.3 million registrations)
  • Australia (.au): .au domains signify Australia’s robust digital ecosystem and high internet penetration. They are open for global investment, enabling connections with Australian businesses across various sectors. (4.3 million registrations)

When only ccTLDs are taken into consideration, these were the top performers for Q1 2024.

  1. .cn (China)
  2. .de (Germany)
  3. .uk (United Kingdom)
  4. .ru (Russia)
  5. .nl (Netherlands)
  6. .br (Brazil)

India Joins the Top 10 ccTLDs: Implications and Significance

A notable development highlighted in the Q1 2024 Domain Name Industry Brief is the inclusion of India’s ccTLD, .in, in the top 10 list. This marks a significant milestone reflecting India’s growing digital footprint and the increasing importance of local online identity.

Implications for India’s Digital Growth:

India’s entry into the top 10 ccTLDs underscores its rapid digital transformation and the expanding use of .in domains within the country. As one of the world’s fastest-growing economies with a burgeoning internet user base, .in domains are pivotal for businesses, organizations, and individuals looking to establish a distinct online presence rooted in Indian identity.

For domain investors and businesses eyeing the Indian market, the inclusion of .in domains presents strategic opportunities. It signifies the rising demand for localized digital identities and underscores the potential for leveraging .in domains to engage with India’s diverse consumer base across industries such as e-commerce, tech startups, and digital services.

Government Initiatives and Digital Adoption:

India’s government initiatives promoting digital inclusion and local language content have further boosted the adoption of .in domains. This includes efforts to enhance internet accessibility in rural areas and support for local businesses to embrace digital platforms, driving the popularity of .in domains as a preferred choice for online ventures.

India has one of the cheapest Internet plans in the world which gives its rural and economically lagging sections a say in digital equity. More and more non-elites are embracing the internet, giving an egalitarian feel to it. The Government understands this and is giving maximum support to the cause.

As more and more people join the digital bus, there would be ample opportunity for the domestic extension to strive, thrive and attract considerable revenue. A country with the size of India would always attract prominent investors. Domain Names are no different.
