Cloudflare, an American company that manages the external facing resources, such as websites, of companies faced a peculiar problem. A number of its affiliate companies went unreachable today.
We would also like to inform you that all these websites are now back online and the problem behind the outage was sorted. After some time Cloudflare itself came with a very detailed explanation of the cause of the problem. You can read it here.
The reason for the outage was a change in the network connections of the areas that witnessed the outage. The issue didn’t happen because of any external factor, but is a part of the company’s long ongoing project to convert all of its busiest locations to a more flexible and resilient architecture.
The outage affected a number of big companies such as Discord, Omegle, DoorDash, NordVPN, Amazon Web Services and even League of Legends. None of these companies were reachable during the outage. Interestingly, DownDetector, a platform that analyses outages, was not loading as well!
