Brazilian Law Enforcement reigns in heavy on Piracy Domain Names

Brazilian Law Enforcement authorities are cracking down hard on websites that provide pirated contents. The law agencies have launched a special plan named ‘Operation 404‘ to tackle this issue.

Hundreds of domain names have been seized until now and numerous individuals have even been sent to jail, through various editions of ‘Operation 404‘. The operation is in its 4th stage now, popularly termed Operation 404.4.

However, this 4th edition had something special in it. For the first time, a portion of the seized domain names include blockchain domain names. These blockchain domain names were deployed to advertise the piracy domain names.

Brazilian authorities do not reveal the exact domain names, but domains related to 226 websites, 461 piracy apps and 15 social media applications were brought down in this edition.

Brazilian authorities had received helped from the US and the UK. All these banned platforms facilitated more than 10 million illegal downloads.

Operation 404 is a major multi-jurisdictional effort designed to curb digital pirates throughout Brazil, a country where the consumption of pirated local and international content remains massive and very impactful for the entertainment and media industry. Many companies that operate in a criminal manner maintain a facade of legitimate business, which can only be noticed through permanent surveillance and the use of technologies that make it possible to identify the trail of offenders. Actions to combat piracy, in addition to putting an end to the false feeling that the network is a land without an owner, continue to have an impact by improving solutions, technologies and strategies to deal with pirates.

It is commendable that Brazilian law enforcement is taking strict measures to combat piracy, and it is interesting to note that blockchain domain names were also targeted in this operation. The use of technology in illegal activities is a growing concern and it is important for authorities to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and tactics employed by criminals. It is also encouraging to see international cooperation in fighting piracy, as this is a global issue that affects many industries and individuals. However, it is important to balance these efforts with ensuring that individuals’ rights to privacy and due process are not violated.
