Do companies in India prefer or .in ?

Yesterday, I was asked this question by one of the Indian NamePros members about companies preferring or .in domains in India. The answer might as well help some more people in the community. So here in this post, I will try to answer this question.

Looking at .in history ( which started back in 2005 ) and .in was sort of equally famous back then. In fact, the giant company Google started its operation in India with rather that .in. They are still using the version over .in which might be because of a lot of complexities involved in shifting the domain from to .in . Another big business on is SBI.CO.IN (They also operate through a .com domain, which is the largest public bank in India. Another website which is the largest railway ticket booking platform in India uses the dot

These are some of the old websites in India that are still popular today. Now the question is whether the new startups in India prefer .in or ??
One way to answer this question might be to analyze the recent aftermarket sales of .in and domains. The data shows that .in domains are more preferred over (Source: , This is mainly because .in is 3 characters shorter than  and there seems to be a notion that people tend to buy only if .in is not available!

Another important fact to note is that most of the big startups prefer .com over .in or even if it’s an Indian startup. For example, Flipkart , Myntra, PayTM and so on.  But the truth is with more and more startups flourishing in India and abroad the crunch of .com domains will be ever increasing. Hence we will definitely be seeing the boost in .in and domains in near future. This can be very well seen from China where the .cn domains truly have a strong value compared to .com domains.

So in Conclusion and say Indian companies of startups are preferring to go first with (.com) then (.in) and if both are not available then they go with ( . They may also register dot in or dot as a measure for defensive registration.
