DomainX Conference 2017 India: Event Report

Last week, I attended DomainX, a domain names conference & meetup held at New Delhi in India. The event attracted a small and niche crowd of domain name investors, and there were several learnings and takeaways from the sessions for both professional and aspiring domainers.

The event started off with Chief Guest, Samiran Gupta, head of ICANN India, inaugurating it. Samiran also participated in a fireside chat with the host Gaurav Kohli, a domain names investor. In his chat, Samiran explained about the functioning of ICANN and how important are they, for the internet to run smoothly. ICANN is all inclusive not for profit organisation. Mr. Gupta urged the audience to come up and involve themselves in activities of ICANN.

The second speaker of the day was Amrendra Mishra, who claimed to sell over 6000 domains in the last 5 years. He mentioned that he is able to hand register fresh domains at $10 and sell them within 15 days of acquisition. It was followed by a legal roundtable discussion by the Intellectual Property Attorneys, Zac Muskowitch , Ankur Raheja and Rodney Ryder. They discussed about some of the UDRPs and INDRPs, and spoke about what practices to follow and what not to as a domain name investor.

Next up, we had Jyoti Kapoor from Payoneer who explained how they are advancing in the digital payment sector. They now support a domain holding feature in their escrow which now makes them robust for Domain name Escrow services. After this, we had a delicious Lunch which followed the most awaited talk of the evening, Ali Zandi’s presentation. Due to health issues, he couldn’t make it in person, but joined us through Skype and shared his experience of brokering domains. We all enjoyed it and looking forward to implement some of those tactics in our business.

Then came Mr. Troy Rushton the CEO and Founder of Name Investors & Name Brokers. He explained his model of selling domains through a network of tribes. What this means is he uses the contacts of Web Development Agencies, SEO Agencies to reach directly to end users. Later in the evening, we had a newGTLD confluence where Mr. Anand Vora from Donuts INC , Justin Hutauruk from Uniregistry and Sea Ansley from They discussed the future of Domain Name industry and concluded that we still have about 3-5 years to witness new gTLD’s turning into websites in numbers.

There were also sessions by Justin from Uniregistry & Sanjeev Sharma from OpenSRS who educated the audience about their services. Then followed the awards ceremony where several domain investors were given awards for their portfolios and investment strategies. The final part of the conference was a Cricket Match between Domainers and Bloggers which was sponsored by SampleJunction. Unfortunately, I could not attend this match but looking at these pics it looks to be a great match.

That’s all from my side for DomainX and I wish to say thanks to thee organisers for putting up this show and helping us to network with fellow people in the industry.

  1. Personally, I was disappointed with the turnout. There were maybe 70-80 people, most of which were newbies. The largest domainers in India are in the South and almost all of them gave the event a miss. Probably they should consider moving the event back to Bangalore so that the actual market movers can attend.
